Science

Vinegar and baking soda make a fizzy explosion when mixed.

There are 8 planets in our solar system (sorry Pluto).

The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.

There are facts we all remember from our science classes, drilled into our minds until the end of days. But does that mean we were good at science? That we know science?

The science classrooms of the past were unfortunately distracted by figures and facts as the core their subject. By learning things about plants and people and cells and space and the water cycle you were certified as a science minded person and sent on your way.

But science is more than that. Much more.

Science is not how many facts and equations you know, but rather a process. Science is about theorizing and testing and failing and retesting and questioning. It’s about inquiry, and modern science classrooms are moving this way too. Specific outcomes are given less important than approaches and ideas.

It’s Methods over Results.

And by teaching student how to solve problems and tackle challenges in general, then they’ll be better equipped to take on whatever their future endeavors give them.

That’s a real science minded person.
